'The Boy Who Climbed Out Of His Face' by SHUNT at The Jetty, London

What just happened?!

With no shoes and no socks, 10 people are guided through a disorientating maze of shipping containers and are spurted out after 45 minutes; confused, shocked and full of questions.

The venue, The Jetty in Greenwich that is compiled of crates and shipping containers, was a beautiful setting on the river with food, drink and live music, all adding to the mysterious, enchanting appeal of the show. With our white shoeboxes in hand and after scrambling our way through a pitch-black maze our group was greeted by an unsettling latex mask, making everyone realise this was going to be something very unusual and possibly disturbing. From then on, every few minutes we were led into different but wonderful spaces, from perspective corridors to darkened rooms, and welcomed by another nightmarish mask.

I don’t want to give anything else about the show away because it was definitely an experience and the appeal is the unknown, absurd nature of it. You become aware of what makes you feel uncomfortable, your reactions to everything around you and every single sense is put to the test.

Perhaps a show for the gutsier but, as long as you don’t look for a fluid narrative, it’s worth a visit. Don’t worry if you come out with no idea what happened; just enjoy the absurdity.
